Joint and several liability rule
Any defendant in a legal action for medical malpractice is potentially liable for the full amount of compensation, regardless of the relative share of responsibility among all defendants. Defendants may then sue each other to apportion liability among themselves.
Joint Commission
Formerly called the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), an independent, nonprofit, voluntary organization, that develops standards and provides accreditation surveys and certification to hospitals and other health care organizations (such as psychiatric facilities, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care, and hospital care).
