Gain sharing arrangement
Used by insurers in pay for performance programs; shares a portion of cost savings with providers in order to incentivize providers to reduce utilization and improve quality.
Gaming
The unethical or illegal manipulation of a process or system for unwarranted gain or advantage.
General practitioner, generalist
A general physician or family physician; a physician trained to take care of the majority of nonsurgical diseases, sometimes including obstetrics.
Generalizability
In a broader context, the extent to which information about a program, project, or instructional material collected in one health care setting can be used to reach a valid judgment about how it will perform in other settings. In the research context, the degree to which results in a limited analysis can be used to make inferences about a broader population or set of situations.
Genetics-based care
Also called personalized medicine, a potential key innovation in care that differentiates interventions according to the genetic basis of disease and the genetic makeup of the individual.
Georgetown University Long-Term Care Financing Project
A proposal to phase in an expansion of Medicare to include a new long-term care component (Part E). The benefit would cover nursing home and home health care.
Government Accountability Office
Known as the investigative arm of Congress, its work includes oversight of federal programs (including health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and the FEHBP); providing insight into ways to make government more efficient, effective, ethical, and equitable; and projecting long-term trends and challenges.
Graduate Medical Education
The internship, residency, and fellowship component of a physician's educational training.
Group insurance
Any insurance plan, such as health insurance, that covers individuals by means of a single-group agreement, contract, or policy issued to an employer or association with which the insured individuals are affiliated.
Guideline/Clinical Practice Guideline
A systematically developed statement to assist practitioners and patients in choosing appropriate health care for a specific clinical condition. It reflects current scientific knowledge of practices and expert clinical judgment on the best ways to prevent, diagnose, treat, or mange diseases and disorders.
